MALTA & GOZO
Bradt Guides, 4th edition 2019 (first edition 2010)
by Juliet Rix
In the most comprehensive guide to Malta and Gozo, Juliet takes readers around the islands’ unique historic, prehistoric, and cultural sights - from temples older than Stonehenge to the baroque glories of the Knights of St John, secret WWII control rooms to statement 21st-century architecture.
There are plenty of recommendations for the best places to stay, where to eat in this increasingly foodie destination, how to join in its colourful firework-fuelled festas, and of course the top spots for sunbathing and swimming.
The book takes travellers off the beaten track, into lesser known corners of Malta and Gozo, and the landscape Edward Lear enthusiastically described as “pomskizillious and gromphiberous, seeing as no other words can describe its magnificence”.
IS THERE SEX AFTER CHILDBIRTH? - A Couple’s Guide to Survival through Pregnancy, Birth and Parenthood
Thorsons, Harper Collins, 1995
by Juliet Rix
Bringing together medical and social research with a host of original interviews, this book presents previously hard-to-find information about the physical and emotional changes brought on by pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.
This is an intense time in any couple's emotional and sexual relationship. Research shows that more than half of couples take longer than a year to get their sex lives back on track after the arrival of their first child, and counsellors and sex therapists recognise this as a time when long-term problems can take root.
Yet little or nothing is said about this in most antenatal classes, and 'baby books’ brush over it. Sex and parenthood is one of the last taboos.
Please note: This book is now out of print and out of date (medically and socially). The core findings about parenthood, expectation and understanding, remain highly relevant but 25 years on it is in need of an update.
